{Science} When Science becomes Scientism
The religion of science–what I call “Scientism”–has invaded our culture so deeply, I’m not sure how we come back from it.
I’m sure you’ve heard it: “I believe in Science!” or “Trust the Science” or “Science is Real” or “Science Matters.” You can see these phrases in hashtags on every social media platform.
But what does it mean? Usually the context of such hashtags are used any time what a person is referring to has been disputed by someone else. Of course, anyone disputing the “Science” is a heretic (along the likes of Galileo) or just paranoid. This is how terms like “anti-vaxxer” and “anti-science” began, so the person doesn’t have to actually refute the argument, just hurl an insult and move on, without adding any real proof of information to the argument.
Once the lockdowns started, and then the mask mandates, I predicted that this would become the “status quo.” Why? Because once you convince people that they are responsible for someone else’s health, that a simple cloth over your face will stop viruses, why not protect everyone else forever?
Of course, it’s a complete false statement to say that cloth masks protect anyone. Study, after study, after study has confirmed that cloth masks do not stop viral transmission, and N95 masks are only slightly better, and no better than the Flu vaccination. I could post all of the links here, but my experience is that 95% of our culture will not read anything but a headline or an article that confirms their worldview; we are rich in available information and poor in the willingness to BE educated.
We are raising a generation to be scared of everyone and everything. We aren’t telling people to be responsible for their own health; in fact, you can watch a recent vaccine recipient walk into an ice cream shop, or buy a cart load of processed foods. Inflammation is a big problem with CV-19, and foods cause inflammation (especially white flour and sugar). No one is being told to stop eating sugar, drinking alcohol and exercising, which actually DOES enhance your immune system and reduces mortality. This virus is especially deadly for obese people, but you don’t hear the media recommending weight loss and proper eating.
So here we are. All in the name of “safety” my local zoo wants to continue these “measures” even after they are lifted. I can tell you that after being a member for 18 years, there is no way I will buy a membership to a zoo like this. We will drive out of state to go to a zoo that values humanity and does not want to dehumanize people in the name of “safety.” At the Denver Zoo, masks are required at all times, even outdoors in the sunshine. At the Kansas City Zoo, they are required inside and when you cannot “social distance.” (Not happy about that either, but I have a feeling they will lift theirs long before the Denver Zoo ever does).
