We are driving home from picking up one of our girls from college for Thanksgiving weekend. We have the 80s station playing, and I have to say that the music from the 80s brings back “all the feels.”
There’s nothing quite like music to trigger memories!
I didn’t have the most Christian taste in music as a teenager. In fact, I was into “New Wave” music.
There was a boom of underage dance clubs when I was teen. They were alcohol free, had a cover charge, and we could barely afford soda, but we would dance for hours to music with crazy beats and even stranger lyrics.
Depeche Mode: everything counts
“The grabbing hands grab all they can
All for themselves, after all
The grabbing hands grab all they can
All for themselves, after all
It’s a competitive world
Everything counts in large amounts”
We thought we were really deep!
Then there’s:
A-ha take on me
“All the things that you say
Yeah, is it life or just to play
My worries away?
You’re all the things I’ve got to remember
You’re shyin’ away
I’ll be comin’ for you anyway”
It’s amazing how many weird lyrics you finally identify as weird when you’re grown. I love the Police and Sting, but one day I was listening to this song and I realized how creepy it is:
Every breath you take
And every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
I’ll be watching you
Every single day
And every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay
I’ll be watching you
Oh, can’t you see you belong to me?
How my poor heart aches with every step you take
Every move you make
And every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I’ll be watching you
But here I am cruising along the wet highway, listening to the 80s music I danced to, and it seems like several lifetimes ago now. I’m remembering fewer details as time goes by,
But I still remember the FEELINGS.
The freedom, the promise of life, the newness of it all. I could be anything I wanted, my life was in front of me. My path wasn’t set, few mistakes had been made already, and I was ready to conquer the world.
Sigh.
Almost home now. Back to the reality.
Take care lovelies. Thanks for reading!
